Summertime is the busy time for the Operations Department at Rock Hill’s School District Three. The kids are out for summer break enjoying that trip to the beach or day camp at the local YMCA. The rising summer temperatures in the upstate provides an annual signal to the management and crews that it’s time to renovate and update the educational facilities. They wax the floors, fix furniture, paint the walls and yes, update their communications infrastructure. These projects need to be done quickly in order to fit into the framework of the summer schedule so that the educational experience for the children will not be interrupted once class resumes in August. Here’s a peek into some of what’s going on this summer within the district’s technology infrastructure:

Rock Hill School District Three, District Office
With the administration personnel moved to a temporary facility, CSI began rip out of the existing structured cabling system in late June. Upon completion of the rip out, CSI crews installed over 1,000 feet of cable tray for the new system to be installed. CSI engineers assisted the district’s IT personnel with MDF design including rack population. Design work for district servers and peripheral equipment is still ongoing.

Facing an aggressive schedule to say the least, crews have worked around the clock to meet the deadline requirements of the district. Approximately half of the facility was turned over for use after only a couple of weeks onsite. To date, CSI crews have installed over 120,000 feet of Category 6 UTP. All completed segments have been installed according to industry standards. Upon completion, the BerkTek/Ortronics system will be certified and warranted per the manufacturer’s program.

India Hook Elementary
CSI is involved in many areas of the technology infrastructure at India Hook, which is scheduled to open for school this year. The school is classically styled with over 35 classrooms in a picturesque setting on the north side of Rock Hill. CSI is providing a Superior Essex/Hubbell certified structured cabling solution.

In addition to the structured cabling, CSI is providing control cabling, conduit systems, CCTV and ETV for the facility. We are currently in the design phase for installation of interactive whiteboards for each classroom.

Rebound Flexible Learning Center
CSI’s seasoned outside plant technicians assured protection of the district’s utilities recently at this facility. As per standard policy and procedure, CSI had the excavation area located prior to digging for the underground conduit pathway to be installed. As many excavators are aware, water lines cannot be easily located. Through previous experience our crews were able to navigate the unknown underground terrain and avoid cutting into the existing water line while placing a trench for the conduit for the fiber to be installed. Existing water lines were intersected six times in the length of the dig without damage. Thanks guys, for your good work!

Once the pathway was placed, the fiber was installed to provide a high speed reliable data connection that will not be affected by lightning between the main building and the mobile campus at the rear of the property. CSI’s fusion splicing technicians finished the job off with a splice to the existing fiber optic network.
